If You’re Looking for an All Electric Family Sedan, the Wait is over Thanks to Tesla Motor’s Model S

Building on the proven technology and success of the Tesla Roadster, which is six times as energy efficient as gas guzzlers, Tesla has created a sleek and family oriented sedan – the Model S. With the ability to sit five adults and two children (that's 7 people!) in calm comfort you won't be losing storage with a clever “additional” trunk under the hood. It's so efficient at storage you can pack up a 50-inch television, mountain bike and a surfboard. That's more storage space than most SUVs.

For the motor minded who want to know only about the performance of the Model S, you can expect; 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds, 120 mph top speed, sport sedan dynamics, and an all-wheel-drive available. This is for the standard model. If you plan on the sport version you'll be up to 60 mph in under five seconds. (Personally, I'm looking forward to being able to listen to Pandora Radio in my car and checking directions on Google Maps – it has a 17 inch touchscreen with in-car 3G connectivity.)

"Model S doesn't compromise on performance, efficiency or utility — it's truly the only car you need," said Tesla CEO, Chairman and Product Architect Elon Musk. "Tesla is relentlessly driving down the cost of electric vehicle technology, and this is just the first of many mainstream cars we're developing."

Tesla cars will not require that routine oil change and they have far fewer moving (and breakable) parts compared to typical internal combustion engine vehicles. The battery pack is mounted on in the floor and was designed to be changed in less time than it takes to fill a gas tank. And with the QuickCharge, you'll be ready to hit the road after only 45-minutes.

Expected to start production on the Model S in late 2011, the anticipated base price of the Model S is $49,900 after a federal tax credit of $7,500. You'll have the option to choose your battery pack – 160, 230 or 300 miles per charge. Of course, the Model S is an all electric vehicle and costs roughly $5 to drive 230 miles!

Reservations for the Tesla Model S are taking place online and at California showrooms. This spring Tesla Motors is said to open a store in Chicago, while stores in London, New York, Miami, Seattle, Washington DC and Munich later in the year.
