If you've been drinking eight glasses of water a day, that's great. You might need to drink a little more. Instead of relying on an average that is suggested for a 105 pound woman and a 250 pound man, use this simple calculation for your optimal water intake. 

Take your body weight, in pounds, and divide it in half. This is the amount of water you should be drinking daily, in ounces. Divide that by 8, the number of ounces in a cup, and you have 10. That's the number of glasses you should drink. As an eight ounce glass is pretty small for the average American it's pretty easy to see why 8 glasses was suggested.

If you find yourself not enjoying the taste because you are used to sugary drinks like soda, you can try adding a slice of lemon to your water. Water is also very tasty when cold, just be aware that cold water can over-stimulate your kidneys as it requires your body to work at metabolizing it.

How much water should I drink?

There is no definitive answer as each person’s body and lifestyle are different. The recommended 8 glasses of water a day is not the best estimate. Instead use the following calculation:

Body Weight (in pounds) / 2 = amount of water (in ounces) to drink daily

The average woman (over 20 years old) in the United States weighs 164.7 pounds. By the math she would be recommended to drink 82.35 ounces of water daily. That would be about roughly 10 glasses of water assuming the glass is equal to 1 cup (8 ounces).

The average man (over 20 years old) in the United States weighs 194.7 pounds. The calculation would suggest he drink 97.35 ounces of water every day. Again, if a glass is equal to 8 ounces, or 1 cup, he would drink about 12 glasses of water daily.

It’s best to spread your water intake throughout the day for the best results. It’s easier to drink cold water than room temperature water. And you can always add a squeeze of lemon for flavor.

You’ll want to drink water before, during and after you work out to have a successful workout.

  • Before you start exercising drink 1 to 2 cups of water
  • While exercising you’ll want to drink ½ to 1 cup of water every 15 minutes

With up to 75% of your body’s weight due to water, it’s key we keep our bodies hydrated. We need to make up for the amount of water we lose every day. Breathing, sweating, and our trips to the bathroom are all part of routine water loss. This is why it’s important to drink more water in the summer months. Our water is the most precious resource and we can't afford to waste it. Some of the easiest ways to keep the water supply safe include not pouring out thinners, solvents or paint down the drain. You can have them picked up or delivered to a hazardous waste disposal site. Maybe you have a local theater group, school, or parks department that can use your leftovers.
